Sea Shepherd CEO, Steve Roest, flies at an undisclosed altitude to examine the situation in the Gulf. Watch as he narrates his account. Please help us get this evidence out there. Favorite and share this video. www.seashepherd.org Wednesday, June 30, 2010 Operation Gulf Rescue Ramps Up Operation Gulf Rescue The problem: On the morning of April 20, 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Louisiana, the British Petroleum (BP) Deepwater Horizon semi-submersible mobile offshore drilling unit exploded, killing 11 people. On the afternoon of April 22th, a large oil slick began to spread from the former rig site, and today this disaster is the largest offshore spill in US history. Estimates vary as to how much oil is gushing into the Gulf of Mexico, but experts agree that it is between 50000 and 150000 barrels of oil per day. On May 19th, scientists with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and elsewhere stated that oil had reached the Loop Current. By June 4th, the oil spill had landed on 125 miles of Louisiana’s coast, washed up along Mississippi and Alabama barrier islands, and was found for the first time on a Florida barrier island at Pensacola Beach. The greatest concern has been that severe weather, as we enter hurricane season, might push the oil inland and over a far wider area, simultaneously rendering many clean-up and wildlife rescue operations useless or redundant. On June 30th, Sea Shepherd Gulf Operations Liaison Dr. Bonny Schumaker and Sea …
The name Audrey means “noble strength.” It was a 12 hour round trip to save this girl. She came from an extremely under funded and over worked animal shelter that was doing the best they could, given the circumstances they were handed. It was a high kill and low adopt situation, and had I not seen an internet posting for her, she likely would have been euthanized or died in that place. My original intention was to get her better and adopt her out, but when the time came, I just couldn’t bare to part with her. The type of mange she had is called demodex mange – it is the non contagious type. UPDATE: June 1st, 2007. It has now been one full year since Audrey’s new life began. She has continued to thrive and come out of her “abused dog” shell, even around unfamiliar people. I still can’t believe how far she has come, and still has so much more of her life to live. Sometimes I wonder if dogs can remember their pasts like people can, perhaps they can, but I hope she considers it a distant memory that only haunts her once in a blue moon. Her days now are filled with squirrel chasing, long naps on the couch, walks at the park, and wrestling with her sisters. Her favorite thing is to unwind at the end of a long day and get a neck massage (wish I could get them more often!). I have never had a dog that enjoyed something like that. For anyone curious, she still thinks food is the best thing on the planet. I guess some things will never change.
UPDATE: November 5, 2007. Audrey …
What do author Jilly Cooper, One Foot in the Grave actress Annette Crosbie and animal trainer Victoria Stilwell have in common? All three are Honorary Friends of Greyhound Rescue West of England (GRWE), which covers Luton and Bedford. GRWE regional homing officer Graham Crick, 64, would dearly love to have 1960s icon Twiggy on board too. But the face of Marks & Spencer is already spoken for as patron of the Registered Greyhound Trust. Graham, a retired printing boss, is absolutely devoted to the four rescue dogs with whom he and his wife Diana share their sprawling Bedfordshire home. He’s frequently moved to the point of tears discussing the plight of the gentle breed he’s come to know and love since taking in his first greyhound, Amber, in 1988. “They make such perfect pets,” he says, tenderly stroking Rosie, a Borzoi cross border collie whom he describes as “an Essex girl.” Mishka, a Borzoi cross deer hound, is curled up comfortably in an armchair while greyhounds Batty and Jazz nuzzle his hand in the hope of a biscuit. “They’re not like small dogs, they’re not yappy and in your face all the time,” he continues. “Under normal circumstances they sleep most of the day.” He strokes Batty tenderly and says: “She was rescued from an allotment shed with 29 others. She had mange and fleas when we got her. She was a racing dog and if they don’t keep winning . . .” His voice tails off and his eyes mist over. “Some are injected with bleach. It’s a horrible, slow death …
Darlin was a fearful stray dog that was abandoned, alone, and half starved. We met one night in a parking lot and began a relationship that neither of us knew would last six months until I brought her home. She was fearful of everyone and everything imaginable. She still has many fear issues, but is learning to trust her family. She now has the life she deserved. Follow her journey from being a fearful stray dog to becoming a beloved pet at www.caninecrusader.blogspot.com

www.internationalanimalrescue.org International Animal Rescue has taken over a small transit centre for rescued orangutans in Ketapang, West Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo. This temporary centre provides emergency care for animals rescued from the pet trade or driven out of their natural home by deforestation for the palm oil industry. Once our new permanent rescue and rehabilitation centre is built, orangutans will be prepared for release back into protected areas in the wild or into a safe, semi-wild environment should they be unable to fend for themselves.
