We currently have 23 big, big cats at the sanctuary! This includes 18 tigers, 4 lions and Freckles the liger. This video shows the viewer just how much food these animals consume in one day and at what cost. We feed our cats mon-sat with a fasting day on sunday, wednesday night is “rat & bone” night which means whole (dead) rats for the smaller cats Siberian lynx – Geoffroy cat and then whole cow rib bones for the bigger cats Tigers – Cougars. We also give our larger cats whole prey (rabbits) to try and give them a good variety of food as close to their natural diet would be in the wild. This is the favorite time of day for all our cats without a doubt! When a long time feline breeding compound was closed down, the resident cats there needed a place to call home. Even though there are so many unwanted adult captive tigers in the US some of the facilities that took the animals would use them for breeders (Even though none of them have the genes needed in the Tiger Species Survival Program) or put them right back up for sale onto the exotic animal market. Big Cat Rescue got the call that the last 4 tigers left were to be put down if no one picked them up in a few days. Maybe they were left because they weren’t white tigers, or in perfect shape, but Big Cat Rescue didn’t care. BCR quickly pulled together its resources and drove up and got the last 4 on what was to be their final day. The tigers now have a place to call home in an accredited Florida animal sanctuary to live out their final years with the respect that they deserve. Feeding time has to be the cats favorite time of day. We do our best to make sure their diets are not only healthy but also interesting for them. A common misconception that people seem to have is that a tiger in captivity is tame or that they are friendly. Working around Tigers is a pod cast from 2007 in which which we went along side with long time former Big Cat Rescue animal caretaker Brian, as he explained a little on what it’s like to work around tigers. Like people, tigers each have their own unique personalities. In this pod cast we will learn just how extreme some can be. Tigers are a very beautiful but deadly animal that are being wiped off our planet at an alarming rate.
